At Salem Community College, your success is our success.

We will work with you, providing reasonable accommodations to help you succeed. To receive accommodations, please follow these three steps:

  1. Call the Center for Student Success at (856) 351-2760 and provide verification of your disability or record of impairment (e.g., letter from physician, therapist or evaluation team). This information will help the Center for Student Success understand your needs and determine appropriate accommodations. Because SCC does not provide diagnostic assessments, students should utilize high school, community or private diagnostic assessment to evaluate disabilities.
  2. Register for your classes by appointment with Ellen Alford or Naydeen Gonzalez-De Jesus by calling (856) 351-2709.
  3. Complete and return a Notice of Disability Release Form at the beginning of each semester. You might request instructional procedures that have helped you learn more efficiently in the past. Once we receive the form, we will notify your instructors of your requests.

Receiving accommodations does not change the way that a student is treated for participation and grading purposes.

Accommodations provide students with a “level playing field” and an equal opportunity to become successful. Following is the range of accommodations that students can receive, based on their disability.

Accommodations

Functional Disability

(e.g., emotional illness, alcoholism, drug addiction) SCC offers additional testing time, tutoring and individual testing.

Hearing Impairment

For students requiring one, an interpreter is provided. You may also tape-record lectures, sit in the front of the room, attend multiple sessions of the same class (when available), receive tutoring and have a note-taker accompany you to class.

Learning Disability (e.g., auditory processing difficulties, visual processing difficulties, math processing difficulties) SCC provides additional testing time. You may also tape-record lectures and, depending on your disability, use a dictionary, calculator and a spell checker. Alternative testing is also available.

Physical Disability

Each two-story building on campus is accessible and equipped with an elevator. In addition, designated parking areas are available at each building. Accommodations are available in classrooms, the Cettei Library, Center for Student Success and computer labs.

Visual Impairment

You can tape-record lectures; sit in the front of the room; and use a magnifying glass or enlarger to view notes, textbooks and exams. SCC may implement additional modifications to meet individual student needs.

Customized Basic Skills

Placement Testing

If you have a documented disability, you may qualify for customized placement testing, such as an individual setting, extended testing time and a varied test format. Visit the Center for Student Success in Donaghay Hall or call (856) 351-2709 to arrange customized placement testing.

Parking

To park in space reserved for individuals with disabilities, you must have a placard or a handicapped parking plate on your vehicle. For more information about placard permits or handicapped parking plates, call the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission at 1-888-486-3339 or TTY (609) 292-5120. Please do not park in the striped access aisles next to spaces reserved for individuals with disabilities, even if you have a permit or a plate. Access aisles provide room for wheelchair users to move safely to and from their vehicles.

Students requiring accommodations must complete and return a Notice of Disability Release Form at the beginning of each semester.
