Frequently Asked Questions

What is SCC ALERT?

SCC ALERT is a messaging system that allows SCC to communicate with members of the campus community quickly in the event of an emergency.

What is e2Campus?

e2Campus is the company that is contracted to provide the SCC ALERT system. When you sign up for the SCC ALERT system, you will be directed to their Web site for part of the process.

Is SCC ALERT just for cell phones?

SCC ALERT system can send messages to any device that can receive text messages through cellular service, such as cell phones, text pagers, BlackBerrys, and some wireless PDAs. In addition, you can also opt to have the messages sent to your e-mail address.

When will I get an SCC ALERT message?

The College has created a well-defined set of situations that would prompt an emergency SCC ALERT message. SCC ALERT only will be activated for emergency messaging when there is a critical need to transmit urgent information to the campus community unless a subscriber has specifically requested to be a member of an optional group.. Here are some examples or alerts that all subscribers will receive:

  • Ongoing safety threats in which an armed or dangerous criminal is at large on campus.
  • Major facility emergencies or evacuations. This may include a large scale gas leak, fire, or hazardous material spill, occurring either on campus or near enough to campus to cause a credible threat to members of the campus community.
Severe weather or illness. This may include a threat from a tornado requiring those on campus to take shelter, a closing due to anticipated weather issues, or an outbreak of widespread illness on campus.
  • Timely notification of crime. Though not all on-campus crime incidents will be reported via the SCC ALERT system in addition to SCC's usual methods, those that represent a possible threat to campus safety will be communicated through SCC ALERT.
In addtion, members of the campus community may join various alert groups to receive messages of special interest in the following areas. Only individuals who have specifically requested to be included in special interest groups will receive any message other than an emergency message from SCC ALERT. Groups available for subscription include:

Student Activities and Events: Notices of campus events and activities related to current students.

  • General News Headlines: Headlines from the SCC PR Department. Full news stories will be available on the SCC Web site.
  • Student Activities: Notices of special events and activities for current students.
  • SCC Sporting News: Scores and headlines from the SCC Athletic Department.
  • Community Events: Notices of theatrical and community events open to the public.
  • Student Services: Reminders from the Student Services Division to current students regarding important deadines and information.
  • How can I get more information once I receive an SCC ALERT message?
Due to the limitations of text messaging, SCC ALERT messages will be very brief and contain vital and immediate information. More information about an SCC ALERT message will be made available through the other forms of communication available to the College, including messages posted to www.salemcc.edu, broadcast e-mails, and announcements to local media.

Will I get advertising messages from SCC ALERT?

No. SCC ALERT will not be used to deliver any kind of advertising content, and mobile numbers will not be shared with any third parties.

Does signing up for SCC ALERT cost me anything?

There is no cost to sign up for SCC ALERT. The only charges you incur would be the normal fees charged by your mobile service provider for receiving text messages.

Why is SCC ALERT necessary?

The College has a wide variety of methods to communicate with members of the campus community. In recent years, the number of mobile telephones has dramatically increased, and text messaging has become a key method to reach people immediately. The SCC ALERT service allows the College to use the most up-to-date communication method to reach students, faculty and staff in the event of an emergency in addition to the College's other established communication methods.

What if I don’t have a cell phone or my cell phone doesn’t have text messaging?

SCC ALERT is just one of the communication channels used in the event of an emergency. It is not replacing any of our other previous methods of communication. It is building on those existing methods to keep up with the latest technology used by many members of our community. In addition, you can subscribe to SCC ALERT for email alerts only.

How do I sign up for SCC ALERT?

It's easy! Just go to this page and follow the instructions. Be sure to have your mobile phone when you sign up, as you'll need it to enter a confirmation number.
