Is an Online Class right for you? Frequently Asked Questions

Would I do well in an online class? 
Online classes are as challenging, and in many cases more challenging, than a traditional classroom experience.  Please read the “The Online Learning Environment” to help you decide.  You can also visit the SCC Distance Learning pages and taking a short self-assessment. 

When will my online course be available?
Your course will be available on the first day of the semester - January 16, 2007 

How do I get to my online class?
Go to the Webstudy Course Management home page to log-in to your online class.

How do I log in to my online class?
Get complete directions regarding your username and password for your Online Class.  Please allow at least 24 hours from the time you register for class for your log-in to be available to Web Study.  Your online class will be available on the first day of class.  IMPORTANT NOTE:  It is your responsibility to log-in to your class and confirm your access.   

What do I need to participate in an online course?
You will need to have access to a computer.  (see  Technical Requirements).  In addition, some courses will require certain “Plug-ins” such as Flash, Adobe Acrobat etc.  From this page you will be able to download some of the software you may need.  It is not required that you have a computer at home to participate in an online course.  SCC students may use the computer labs in the Center for Student Success to complete online course work. 

What about E-mail?
A working email address is imperative for success in an online course.  The Department of Academic Technology will communicate with you by email prior to the start of your online course.  Your instructor may need to communicate with you by email.  Check the email address listed in WebStudy, confirm that it is current and you have access to it.  NOTE:  Please check any junkmail filters you may have set to ensure that you receive emails from SCC addresses. 

How do I purchase my textbooks?
The required textbooks and materials must be purchased in person at the SCC Follett Bookstore or you may visit Follett's Online Bookstore

Do I have to be online at a specific time?
No, you will not have to be online at a specific time. The courses are designed to be as flexible as possible while still allowing you to get the best education. 

How much time will I have to spend online?
You should expect to spend at least 5 hours per week, per course, online. But remember, this does not include time spent offline doing course work. Read the attached “Online Learning Environment” for additional information. 

How are tests handled?
Some instructors use the Center for Student Success Test Center for tests.  Most instructors place examinations on line. The information provided by your instructor will contain specifics about the course's test policies.
