College Placement Test

Most new Salem Community College students are required to take the College placement test (currently Accuplacer). The Accuplacer placement test provides information about a student’s reading, writing and mathematical skills. Results are used to place students in the appropriate-level courses.

The following students must take the placement test:

  • All new degree/certificate-seeking students and
  • All nondegree students who wish to take a math or English course or any other course that has a math or English prerequisite.
  • See current Accuplacer Test Dates

Students who present proof of completion of any basic skills placement test at another N.J. college or those who present proof (transcript or grade report) of successfully completing a college-level math and English course at another college are exempt from the College placement test.

Students who provide proof of having taken the SAT within the past three years with a score of 540 or higher in the Verbal section are exempt from Accuplacer testing in reading and English; students with 530 or higher in the SAT Math section are exempt from Accuplacer testing in arithmetic and algebra.

Most students take the College placement test before they register for the first time. Students may register for the test once they have applied and paid the $25 admissions application fee.
